Where Do Babies Come From?

The Cupcakes are three years old now and you’d think that they would have some interest in this topic. There’s been a mini-baby boom at their school. Over the past six months four of the other children have gotten baby siblings. And the school director had a baby in February. Despite seeing pregnant women almost every day at school they never once showed any interest in why the other mommies’ tummies were getting bigger and bigger. No embarrassing “why is Daisy’s mommy so fat” questions. Nothing. Even when I tried to bring it up. They couldn’t care less.

Babies are another story. They love, love, love babies. They notice babies everywhere.

This morning in the car on the way to school they noticed a woman walking down the street pushing a stroller. Cries of “Baby!!!! Mama!!!! Baby!!!” erupted from the back seat.

“That’s right, sweeties. That’s a baby.” ‘Hmm…’ , I think. ‘Let’s try this one more time’

“Sweeties, do you know where babies come from?” (There’s nothing like the direct approach.)

“YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”, they shout, arms waving excitedly, grinning with glee at their own cleverness.

‘Oh, really???’ This is news to me…

“S2, H2, can you tell me where babies come from?”

“TREES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” More waving and grinning.

Now you know, too.
