So Not in the Loop

In a previous life I used to delude myself that I was more or less on top of what was hip. Often it was closer to ‘less’ than ‘more’, but at least I could hold my own in a (fairly brief) casual conversation about music, movies, local clubs, etc.. I knew which restaurants still served food at 3 a.m., and more importantly, which of those served food you might actually want to eat.

I kind of miss that feeling. But even more than that, I’m frustrated by the knowledge that there are really fun, interesting things that are passing me by completely. Today I got emails from two different friends asking me if I knew about Baby Loves Disco. I didn’t. Just in case you have been living under the same rock as me (Hi!) here’s a brief description from their website:

About Baby Loves Disco

All across the country, Baby Loves Disco is slowly but surely transforming the hippest night clubs into child proof discos as toddlers, pre-schoolers and parents looking for a break from the routine playground circuit let loose for some post naptime, pre-dinner fun. Make no mistake, this is NOT the Mickey Mouse club, and Barney is Banned. Baby loves disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real djs blending classic disco tunes From the 70s, & 80s guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving.

I have spent the last sixteen months living in a city which has a Baby Loves Disco chapter and it has completely escaped my notice. Why didn’t anybody tell me sooner???? My girls need pink satin jackets. And a place to wear them. You will find me, um, us at the head of the line for the next event.

And I’m not done yet. . . I’ve also managed to live up to this point knowing nothing about The Kinsey Sicks. (Warning: If you hold traditional family values you may not find this nearly fantastic as I do. If you are offended, don’t blame me. I tried to warn you.) Lime & Violet used I Wanna Be a Republican as the outro* on their latest podcast. (Repeat Previous Warning. Also, the linked file is nearly 3MB. It’s worth it.) Man are they good. And FUNNY.

Now I’m wondering: what other subversive wonderfulness am I missing?

Note to self: Must get back in the loop.

* It’s really a word. Wikipedia says so.
